Trekking to Gheralta Rock Hewn Churches
This trekking itinerary will take to the remote rock hewn churches in Tigray region and admiring the beauty the churches as well as breathtaking view over the lowland of the Tigray region.

Means of Transportation: Fly, Drive and Trek
Day 01: Fly to Mekelle
Fly to Mekelle and check-in hotel and start explore the town including a visit to the museum and Castle of Emperor Yohannes and memorial statue. Overnight hotel
Day 03: Drive to Dugem
Morning after breakfast start drive to Dugem to visit Dugem Selassie church and Abraha we Atsebeha the latter famous for its architectural feature’s o/n Camping in Dugem.
Day 04: Trek to Abuna Abraham
Trek to Abuna Abraham in the morning Lunch in Dugem. Afternoon walk to Yohannes Maequddi. Overnight Dugem camping
Day 05: Trek to Mariam Korkor and Daniel Korkor
Trek 2 hours or drive to the Megab area about 10k away to visit Mariam Korkor and the nearby smaller church of Daniel Korkor. A picnic lunch after a steep climb up and Time to enjoy the wonderful view across the Gheralta Plains. In the afternoon a gentle return to camp. Visit local village local grinding mill or maybe join in coffee ceremony. o/n Camping
Day 06: Trek to Abune Yemata
Trek to Abune Yemata perhaps one of the most difficult churches to access.
A real climb (see right!), at times across a sheer rock face not for the fainthearted but worth it for the view even if you do not make it to the very top. Relaxing picnic lunch before descending back to camp.
Day 7 Drive Adigrat
Drive to Sinkata on the Wukro Adigrat road visit a selection of churches from a choice of several, including Arbuta Insesa in Adi Chewa, Medhane Alem Adi Kasho, Petros and Paulos and Mikael Melehayezenghi. O/n camping or local hotel
Day 8 Fly back to Addis Ababa
Morning drive to Mekele and Fly back Addis Ababa depending on your departure time transfer to the airport and fly back home
