Danakil Depression

The Danakil Depression, also called Afar Depression, is a geological depression in the Horn of Africa, where it overlaps Eritrea, the Afar Region of Ethiopia, and Djibouti. It is the homeland of the Afar people. Danakil is well known as one of the cradles of hominids, containing the Middle Awash, site of many fossil hominid discoveries; Gona, site of the world's oldest stone tools; and Hadar, site of Lucy, the fossilized specimen of Australopithecus Afarensis.

The Danakil Depression includes the lowest point in Africa, Lake Asale (–155 metres). Dallol is also part of the Depression, one of the hottest places year-round anywhere on the face of the Earth. Only the Awash River flows into the depression, where it ends in a chain of lakes that increase in salinity.

Danakil Depression results from the presence of a tectonic triple junction, where the spreading ridges that are forming the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden emerge on land and meet the East African Rift. The central meeting place for these three pieces of Earth's crust is around Lake Abbe known as Afar Triangle. Also many volcanoes can be found in the region including Erta Ale and the Dabbahu Volcano.

Dallol: Sulfur Spring, colorful Rock and Salt Slabs

Dallol volcano is located in the Danakil Depression in North East of Ethiopia offers an opportunity to see the first signs of a new ocean basin forming. South of Dallol, the crust is cut into rectangular salt slabs and transported up into the highlands a near endless procession of camel caravans. The salt canyons south of Dallol Mountain are some of the most impressive geological features in the area. It looks like another planet because there are lots of colorful rocks in each meter. It’s quite like a science fiction.
